The Hellenistic period saw the first human reflection on the history of the mankind itself, in a context which surpassed the regional boundaries. In this sense, this period marked the starting point of the so-called “world history”. It also witnessed the first great socio-political and civilizational transformation since the writing system had become an administrative tool for the rulers. Its profound impact can still be felt today.
In a three-century long and transcontinental setting, multiple races and cultures, previously opposing one another in their forms, came to find their respective and symbiotic positions in an organic whole, under the auspices of the discourse of Panhellenism. Consequently, the concept of internationality, that is “inhabited land”
(gè oikoumenè), matured.
The present course aims to investigate the socio-political background, as well as the ideological strategies, which may have supported or challenged this idealized historiography. This course is helpful for any student from any faculty who wishes to have a better idea of the progress of the human history and how the mankind once chose to examine its own history.

• Introduction of the interdisciplinarity of the classical and Near East studies.
• Reading and analysis of textual sources.

• Curiosity and a few ideas about the important political events, geography and chronology of the Mediterranean region and the Near East of the first millennium BC.
• Reasonable level of English.
• Assiduity in study and good participation in discussion and team work.
